Small Intestinal

Bacterial Overgrowth

What is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) refers to a condition in which an abnormally large number of bacteria which are seen in the large intestine are present in the small bowel.

What are the symptoms of SIBO?

Common symptoms of SIBO include bloating, gas, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition. These symptoms are very non-specific and found in a variety of different conditions making the diagnosis at times very challenging.

What causes SIBO?

SIBO is due to the overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine impairing absorption and causing small bowel inflammation. Conditions that are known to contribute to SIBO include:

  • Older Age

  • Diabetes

  • Pancreatitis

  • Scleroderna

  • Small Intestinal Surgery

  • Intestinal Lymphoma

  • Celiac Disease

  • Medications

As you can see, SIBO is linked to many conditions, and not all of them are linked to the gastrointestinal tract.

Who Is most likely to develop SIBO?

Certain individuals are at a higher risk of developing SIBO, including older adults, people with diabetes, celiac disease, pancreatitis, scleroderma, previous intestinal surgery, or conditions that slow digestion. Long-term use of certain medications may also increase the risk.

How Is SIBO diagnosed?

SIBO is commonly diagnosed using a breath test that measures hydrogen and methane gas produced by bacteria in the small intestine. Blood tests, stool studies, imaging, or endoscopy may also be used to rule out other digestive conditions.

When should I see a gastroenterologist for SIBO?

You should see a gastroenterologist if you experience persistent bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, malnutrition, or digestive symptoms that do not improve. Early evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and prevent complications.

What is the treatment for SIBO?

Treatment for SIBO typically includes antibiotics, addressing underlying digestive conditions, dietary modifications, and nutritional support when needed.
